Year 1979

May - ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’- (single)

As the band, 'Tubeway Army' first achieved charts success in May 1979 with the now legendary ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’. The single reached the coveted No.1 position on 30 September 1979 and was in that top spot for four weeks. 

Overall, the single spent 16 weeks in the Top 100 music charts, 12 of these within the Top 40. This single last appeared in the music charts in the chart for week commencing 01/09/1979.

June - ‘Replicas’ - (album)

Following on from this success, Tubeway Army’s next chart hit was with the now iconic album ‘Replicas’. The album entered the charts in June 1979 and also reached the No.1 position on the album charts. The No.1 spot was however not reached until 21 July 1979. 

The album spent 31 weeks in the charts and appeared within the UK’s Top 40 for 21 of these. This album last appeared in the music charts in the chart for week commencing 08/12/1979.

August - ‘Tubeway Army’ - (album)

Tubeway Army’s first album (self-titled ‘Tubeway Army’) was re-released subsequent to the chart success of the album 'Replicas' and the single 'Are ‘Friends’ Electric?'. Tubeway Army (also known as the ‘Blue Album’ or ‘First Album’) entered the charts in August 1979 and appeared for 10 weeks within the Top 100, seven of which were in the Top 40 album charts. The album reached its peak position (No.14) on 15 September 1979 and was last seen in the music chart for week commencing 02/10/1979.

September - ‘Cars’ - (single)

Gary Numan’s first chart hit under his own name was with the single release of ‘Cars’ which together with its parent album ‘The Pleasure Principle’ entered the UK Official Music Charts in September 1979 (01/09/1979). Cars reached the No.1 position on 22 September 1979 and remained there for a single week but in all spent 11 weeks within the Top 100, nine of which were appearances in the Top 40. This single last appeared in the music charts in the chart for week commencing 10/11/1979.

September - ‘The Pleasure Principle’ - (album)

As mentioned earlier, the album ‘The Pleasure Principle’ was also released under Numan’s own name. This album also achieved the coveted No.1 spot within the charts on 22 September 1979, spending 2 weeks in the top position. In all, The Pleasure Principle appeared within the UK music charts for 22 weeks, 14 of which were within the Top 40 records on the music charts. This album last appeared in the music charts in the chart for week commencing 02/02/1980.

November - ‘Complex’ - (single)

The second single released from 'The Pleasure Principle' album to appear in the charts was entitled ‘Complex’. The single reached its high spot at No.6 on 01 December 1979, spending 9 weeks in the charts of which 6 were appearances in the Top 40 rankings. 

This single last appeared in the music charts in the chart for week commencing 19/01/1980.
